***********************************************************
A great amount of time was spent developing, debugging, testing and
improving upon DEFRAG, not to mention updating it each time a new version of
WWIV came out. Up until version 1.23, DEFRAG was free and the source code
was included so that users would be able to compile it themselves according
to their own VARDEC.H setup. However, with the advent of the new structures
in WWIV 4.22's VARDEC.H, inclusion of the source code has become unnecessary.
DEFRAG 3.00 *should* run with any 4.22/4.23 VARDEC.H. However, I will be more
than happy to custom-compile versions specifically for people with special
needs and applications, provided they register, or sign and notarize a legal
agreement to do so after receiving and testing the custom copy for 30 days.
Otherwise, making such drastic changes usually isn't worth the effort.
One other change with DEFRAG 2.00+ was the addition of a registration
policy. Registration is--and always will be--only $15.00 US, and allows you
FULL access to all the options of DEFRAG, including the removal of the
registration request messages. Registration is for life and entitles you to
unlimited free upgrades and technical support anytime. Unregistered version
2.20 copies have the following stipulations:
* Subs above 80 (#79 according to BOARDEDIT) are not *** REMOVED ***
defragmented. *** REMOVED ***
* A small plea for registration is shown before DEFRAG
begins its work, and there is a VERY small delay for
unregistered users to read the registration plea.
* Unregistered copies will wait for keyboard input after
execution, or will automatically time out after 3 minutes.
I pondered long and hard, trying to decide whether or not I should limit
DEFRAG in any way, and if so, what would be enabled by registration. I feel
that the few (essentially NONE) restrictions listed above are very generous,
and even if you DON'T register DEFRAG, you will get some real big savings.
Registering Shareware is the most decent and honorable thing a computer user
can do, and you will feel GOOD about using a registered copy of DEFRAG.
Supporting Shareware generates more/better Shareware!
When you register, you will receive in the mail a letter with your
registration code and instructions for telling DEFRAG you've registered it.
If you requested any disks, they will also be mailed to you with your
registration code. Please see the file MAILER.REG for more info.
Due to recent events (receiving bad checks as DEFRAG registration
payment), you should allow up to four (4) weeks for your order to be
processed. By no means will I purposely take this long, but I'm not about to
get burned again. In most cases, I return registration letters within 2
weeks. However, sometimes my bank is VERY slow about getting checks through
the system (or telling me about it). In all instances, I will do my best to
get registrations out ASAP. (I have changed banks because of this.)
--------------------
Registering your copy of DEFRAG is VERY simple. Just run the included
REGISTER.BAT batch file, or print out the file MAILER.REG manually
(NOTE: use the DOS command "copy mailer.reg prn" instead of PRINT or an
editor), fill out the information and include a check or money order, then
fold, staple and mail the form! That's all there is to it!
I sincerely thank you for using DEFRAG, and THANK YOU for considering
registration of this fine piece of software. I will do my UTMOST to provide
technical support to solve any problems anyone has with DEFRAG, but keep in
mind that registered users of DEFRAG will ALWAYS be first priority.
--------------------
After hearing dozens of complaints from people who said they wouldn't
register DEFRAG because it lacked support for subs higher than 80 in the
Shareware release, I made the decision to remove the limit and make v3.00
fully-functional. It now appears that those people were only blowing steam,
because I've not seen any more registrations since 3.00 than I saw before,
which is sad. I am forever an optimist, so I will let DEFRAG 3.0x retain
its current state (no limitations) in the hopes that maybe those people just
haven't written off a check yet, but the realist part of me says I've
probably just killed any chance for recovering the costs of developing
DEFRAG.
